Ideally, ceiling fan blades should be 7 to 8 feet from the floor for maximum cooling. For ceilings 9 feet or taller, use a downrod to bring the fan down to the proper height above the floor. Ceilings taller than 9 feet will require an extension downrod. For example, a 14 foot ceiling would require a five foot extension downrod to position the blades 8 feet above the floor, since you need to allow one foot for the space from the top of the motor to the bottom of the switch housing. Downrods come in two sizes 1/2" and 3/4".

Dont buy Kichler fans
The biggest problem with kichler fans other than the poor quality craftsmanship, is the light kits. Poor finish and unbalanced from the factory. But even worse is the fact that they use florescent bulbs with a GU24 base that will not allow you to replace them with a regular bulb. The bulbs are bright, hot and you cannot use a dimmer. The lighting fixture is also integrated so you cannot replace it with one that will allow you to use a lower wattage bulb or dimmer. These fans are overpriced and poor quality.
